Makhana, also called as lotus seeds or Fox nuts, are one of the highest selling dry snack these days. They serve as a healthy substitute to popcorn.

These seeds are often used in quite a few Indian sweets and savouries like kheer, raita or makhana curry, and are also eaten as an evening tea-time snack.

Description

The seeds are of great importance to East Asian cuisine and are used extensively in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine and in Chinese/Indian desserts. The seeds are most commonly sold in the shelled and dried form. Fresh lotus seeds are relatively uncommon in the market except in areas of lotus root and seed production (such as Upper and Central Sindh of Pakistan), where they are sometimes sold as a raw snack commonly called “Dodee”. Raw lotus seeds are low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and are a good source of protein, thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese.
